PRINCELY SCHLOSSPARK SAYN
When Prince Ludwig had the castle renovated in the New Gothic style in the middle of the 19th century, at the same time, based upon a draft from the previous Director of the Botanic Gardens in St. Petersburg, Karl-Friedrich Thelemann, the prominent garden landscaper Heinrich Siesmayer laid out a park as an English landscape garden on a 7- ha-sized agricultural area in front of the castle which, together with the castle and the 2-ha encompassing castle hill, was supposed to depict a special, romantic overall ensemble.
A number of rare trees, the castle pond with its fountain, an art grotto, a Lady chapel, cast-iron cross stations as well as the streams of Sayn and Brex encircling the park give the park a special charm. Today, the Garten der Schmetterlinge Schloss Sayn, which was created by Princess Gabriela in 1987, constitutes the main attraction of the park. Moreover, the visitor will find a children’s playground directly next to the Garden of the Butterflies here.
